About Me
I'm a web developer living in Ottawa, ON. I graduated from Carleton University Computer Systems Engineering in the Spring of 2006.
Since graduation, I have been working on freelance contracts, but I am starting to consider getting a real job if I can find the right fit. Currently, I work at 76design doing what I love for great clients. I have extensive experience with the following tools of the trade:
- MySQL
- PHP
- XHTML and CSS
- JavaScript
As a developer, I don't like to blindly use libraries and frameworks without knowing what is going on behind the scenes. However, after understanding the lower level concepts, it absolutely makes sense to abstract away the details. With that being said, I have to recommend the following excellent open source projects to make your life easier:
- CakePHP - An MVC framework for PHP
- jQuery - Makes JavaScript (especially DOM manipulation) so much fun
When I get some free time I'm also planning to take a look at:
- Django - a Python web framework. Python is a lot of fun.
- Ruby on Rails - the 'in' thing these days. So far I've only looked at the screencasts and done the basic tutorials.
If you are interested, you can have a read through my resume. It's text-based and not fancy.
Hobbies
When I'm not sitting in front of my computer, depending on the season I try to get out mountain biking, skating, snowboarding and golfing. I've also been known to dabble in geeky stuff like building speakers and audio amplifiers. A great resource for this is DIY Audio, they have a huge community on their forums and will provide hours of reading to anyone interested.
